From The CEO's Desk

Dear Customer,Anees

As we enter into a new Financial Year, we carry with us renewed confidence having endured challenging times in the past year and reports of more uncertain market conditions in the coming months. Some regions are still very cautious, while some are being very optimistic. This sentiment was echoed at the recent BRICS Business Forum which brought around 900 leading business leaders from the five countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). Given a renewed enthusiasm for expanding linkages among emerging economies, the leaders of BRICS countries have set the target for scaling up intra-BRICS trade to $500 billion by 2015. This paves the way for enormous opportunities from the BRICS countries.

Mistral will now be working with Texas Instruments, offering customers services on their OMAP and Jacinto6 platforms for any Android and Linux based product designs. We have been working on earlier versions of OMAP and now the access to OMAP5 software and documentation will enable Mistral to offer accelerated product development, quicker time-to-market and custom modifications to product developers planning to bring out OMAP5 products in the industrial, consumer, automotive, robotics and medical electronics segments. We are excited at this new development and look forward to working with customers in building cutting-edge solutions on TIs OMAP5 and Jacinto6 platforms.

Along with the ARM Cortex A15 solutions, we also have some Freescale i.MX and Intel ATOM solutions. This newsletter provides some insights into our experience in the area of portable audio. We will keep you updated on more of our design services in the coming issues.

We would love to hear from you. Do feel free to write to me. Here’s hoping we continue to work together and bring out many more exciting products into the market.

Sincerely,

Building Native applications on Android using NDK

In today's embedded world, most real-time applications are developed using native language. This is due to the state-of-the-art compilers that generate optimized code for native language. But most Android applications are written using a customized version of Java, which is not apt for performance critical applications. An Android developer starts his learning from Java to build an Android SDK based applications. Hence, the chances are high that developers are not aware of the NDK used in conjunction with Android SDK to build performance critical portions of the application in native code. This paper touches upon all the topics that are essential to building an application using NDK.

Customization of Craneboard for an Electronic labeling solution

Mistral’s Craneboard is a low-cost, open-source hardware development platform that enables customers to develop general purpose computing and other applications based on the AM3517 Sitara™ ARM® Cortex™-A8 microprocessor. Named among EDN Hot 100 products of 2011, the Craneboard provides robust processor performance while delivering integrated peripherals not found on existing low-cost development boards.

Mistral was approached by a leading player in the area of Electronic Shelf Label (ESL) solutions to customize the Craneboard as an access point for the electronic tag. This case study showcases Mistral’s expertise in providing customization services on its development platform to help adapt it to an end product design for the customer specific application, with a quick turn-around time.

A Novel Algorithm Towards Lossy Image Compression Using FPGA

Due to the advancement of technology in medical and security, there is a prerequisite for huge storage of image .The performance and the storage area are the main challenge towards the compression and decompression of the image.

This paper presents a Novel algorithm for the lossy compression method, where the performance and storage has been proscribed with hardware descriptive language (HDL). In addition MSE (Mean Squared Error), PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio), Power and Area has been calculated and compared with various fractal compression algorithms.

Android IVI Demo on OMAP4

Over the recent past, Android has been evolving in the Automotive and Infotainment domain. IVI solutions built on Android OS are already proven in commercial deployment. Mistral's Automotive and Infotainment Team presents their latest offering -- AIVI "Android IVI".

This demonstrator showcases Mistral's strength in building end-to-end Automotive and Infotainment solution running Android on OMAP4. Key highlights of this demo include USB AV Media Playback, Apple Device Support, XBMC User Feel Layer, Rear View Camera Streaming and Wireless Audio Streaming.
