From The CEO's Desk

Dear Customer,

Greetings and wishing you all a Wonderful New Year!

We’ve had an eventful last quarter with a host of interesting activities and achievements in the defense sector in India and also here at Mistral. I would like to congratulate the Indian Navy and DRDO for receiving the first of the eight Boeing P-18 aircrafts for long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare as it undergoes its official flight test programme. Mistral is proud to be associated with the India Defense and to have contributed by providing the hardware for the IFF system onboard the aircraft.

I’m sure you all have over the last quarter experienced the renewed focus and impact of the organization, after the restructuring of our Defense SBU. As part of our product development initiatives and aim to align ourselves with varied Customer Programs; we have started working on various RF related initiatives internally. One of our earlier initiatives is the ‘Next- generation DRFM Platform’. The compact form factor DRFM platform is a rugged, conduction-cooled module that can be plugged into any conduction-cooled or air-cooled LRU and be operational instantaneously. Further details of the platform are shared with you in this newsletter.

We will soon be able to present to you a few more RF solutions as a result of this effort.

Mistral was pleased to be one of the sponsors of NIM 2012 organized by NPOL on the eve of their Diamond Jubilee celebration on 13th December, 2012 at Kochi in Kerala. The industry meet served as a forum to interact with the scientists at NPOL and understand the present and future requirements.

As the countdown begins for the upcoming Aero Show 2013 in February, I take this opportunity to wish the entire defense and aerospace community a successful event and hope that 2013 brings the very best of times for all of us.

Sincerely,

Anees Ahmed
CEO

New Products
DBH-670 Digital Beachhead™

The Digital Beachhead™ from Curtiss Wright Defense Solutions combines an Ethernet switch with a powerful Vehicle Management Computer to provide essential network services to ground vehicles.

Housed in a small and lightweight rugged chassis, the Digital Beachhead provides 16 ports of tri-speed 10/100/ 1000 Base-T Ethernet with a variety of flexible network switching features such as VLANs, multicast, and Quality of Service.

The Digital Beachhead also features a multi-core ARM based Vetronics computer, with flexible interfaces to monitor and control essential vehicle systems. The Digital Beachhead truly simplifies the network modernization of today's combat vehicles.

RTI Connext Micro

RTI’s Connext™ Micro provides a small-footprint modular messaging solution for resource-limited devices that have minimal memory, Flash, CPU power or no operating system. By abstracting out low-level networking and communication details and providing a flexible integration framework, Connext Micro minimizes the amount of device or application specific code that has to be created and reduces development costs.

Additionally, Connext Micro is designed to become a certifiable component in high-assurance systems. Connext Micro satisfies the demanding real-time performance requirements, stringent resource constraints, and certification processes required by avionics and medical systems.

Next-generation DRFM Platform

The next generation DRFM platform from Mistral is a rugged system consisting of RF Up/Down Conversion using modulator and demodulator that provides combined data acquisition and processing on a single platform. The rugged, compact form factor DRFM platform is a conduction-cooled module that can be plugged into any conduction-cooled or air-cooled LRU and be operational instantaneously.

The DRFM platform is ideal for use in ECM, carrier processing/echo generation and decoy application and provides users the flexibility to configure the system based on their applications.

Multi-channel Data Acquisition and Processing System: Case Study from Mistral

This case study is a showcase of Mistral’s capability in the design, system integration and deployment of a network-based high-performance multi-channel Data Acquisition and Processing System intended for naval applications. The customer approached Mistral to develop a multi-channel Data Acquisition and processing System capable of providing high configurability, high accuracy data acquisition. The system had to be designed with a modular approach to make the system compatible for use in various naval projects. The design also needed to achieve precision synchronization of sampling clocks in the networked system.

  • Data Acquisition system on a customized backplane supporting
  • 128/256 channel system
  • Synchronization of all the channels
  • Transmitter system on a customized backplane to act as a data simulator
  • Control Interface - Run time re-configurable data acquisition receiver and transmitter systems
  • Multiple System Synchronization
  • System supporting high throughput ports for data transfer
  • System needed to operate in an Air tight environment.

Skyquest High Definition VMS for Airborne Applications: Application Note from Curtiss Wright

The Skyquest High Definition Video Management System (VMS) is designed to control, distribute, record and display video for optimal surveillance mission performance. The proven and flexible Skyquest HD VMS is an ideal fit for any aircraft requiring a fully integrated surveillance suite. With HD sensors now becoming standard in the latest EO turrets installed on aircraft, its logical that air crew will want a mission system that can exploit this latest technology to
its fullest.

The HD VMS uses are numerous and can be applied to applications such as surveillance, search and rescue, law enforcement, military and more. In all these applications, the mission will require high quality video information displayed in real time to the observer and others in the aircraft while also being able to record video for evidential purposes, and possibly sending the imagery via a downlink to colleagues on the ground.

Building a Smarter Smart Grid: Counteracting Cyber-Threats in Energy Distribution: Whitepaper from Windriver

Technology exists today to help energy providers to retrofit and modernize existing grids and to design smarter energy grids with even more built-in intelligence. Unfortunately, the complexity and sheer number of smart devices required to connect seamlessly and provide the intelligence that makes the grid smarter also make energy systems vulnerable to sabotage by hackers and malware.

As a leading provider of secure embedded technology solutions to the energy industry, Wind River® is actively engaged with energy production and distribution operators worldwide to help meet these critical challenges. This paper explores the technology products and practices that are being deployed to address vulnerabilities in a more interconnected energy grid. It also sets forth a six-point process for enhancing security in devices and applications on which the delivery of energy is increasingly reliant.
