With the emergence of technology for Embedded applications, have evolved various platforms. Platforms available today suit deployments for different applications, be it Commercial, Industrial, Defense or Communication in nature. Evolution of the technology with respect to this has catered to modularity as well as environmental conditions. For more than a decade, we saw the VME and Compact PCI architecture as one of the most robust and rugged architectures available for Embedded applications. But in the recent past, we have seen the evolution of processor based technology which demanded more out of the platforms and with this we currently see the advent of newer platforms like the VPX and the ATCA/MicroTCA. These platforms signify the resurgence of technology, and at the same time maintains a backward compatibility to the erstwhile technology as they are by no means outdated. The chart below provides a categorization of the various platforms on which products are available. These form the building blocks for an application.
