Dear Customer,Anees

With an eventful yet challenging year behind us, we have entered into the new financial year with renewed confidence of a more promising year ahead.

The highlight of the last quarter in the Indian Defense industry was the biennial Defexpo2014 held at Pragati Maidan, Delhi. The core topic of discussion at the two day exhibition was the nation’s need for self-reliance and greater indigenization in terms of defense production. With India importing about 70 percent of its defense equipments, there is an increased need for private-sector participation.

The Interim budget for the Financial Year 2014-15 provides for an increased defense spend of 2.24 trillion INR in 2014/15, which is nearly a 10 percent increase from the previous year’s budget. The Public Procurement Policy for SMEs that notifies all CPSUs to procure 20% of their total purchase from SMEs is a great boon for organizations like Mistral, as all technological products (hardware, software) are notified in the policy.

This edition of Infowaves brings you information on an indigenously designed Mistral product – DDC IP core which is a wideband DDC typically used in digital receivers. Also featured is the VPX3- 652 3U rugged gigabit Ethernet switch from our partner Curtiss-Wright which is designed to support advanced network architectures. This issue also includes a case study on the design and development of a compact, power supply module for the Gimbaled Laser Seeker designed by Mistral.

January was an interesting month for Mistral. We were privileged to be invited to the Bahrain International Airshow 2014 by the DRDO as part of their delegation, recognizing our contribution towards the indigenously developed AEW&C. Mistral also took part in a One day workshop on High Density Interconnect technology organized by ISAC. It was our privilege to have been invited by ISAC along with our other industrial partners for a healthy discourse on our longstanding association. Rajeev Ramachandra, CTO from Mistral gave the Key note address at the Workshop which was aimed at creating awareness among the designer community regarding HDI technology. HDI plays to the defense sector’s miniaturization strategy of lighter and smaller electronic components. Further details of the event have been shared with you in this newsletter.

Our team at Mistral is geared up to meet the challenges and opportunities in this financial year; we are striving as ever to add more products and services to better serve our customer needs. We would love to hear from you, do feel free to write to me.

Wishing you a successful quarter ahead!

Sincerely,

Digital Down Converter IP Core designed and developed by Mistral

The Digital Down Converter IP core designed by Mistral is a wideband DDC typically used in digital receivers. This IP is designed to have the following features:

  • Programmability  (Run-time)
  • Customizability (of the IP)
  • Optimal Resource utilization

The programmable digital down converter (DDC) core provides the digital signal processing (DSP) logic required to down-convert a desired frequency band with decimation factors of 2 to 16 in steps of 1.

SCADE LifeCycle Generic Qualified Test Environment (QTE) from Esterel Technologies

SCADE LifeCycle Qualified Testing Environment provides an interactive and a batch user interface. From the interactive interface, test engineers can create and manage test data; setup and launch test execution, and finally, obtain summarized and detailed test execution reports.

All features are available in batch command line allowing for the automation of test campaigns or non-regression testing. The QTE application interface is shared with SCADE Suite®, providing an intuitive and integrated environment.

VPX3-652 3U VPX Rugged Gigabit Ethernet Switch launched from Curtiss-Wright

The VPX3-652 is a fully features Layer-2 managed Ethernet switch designed to support advanced network architectures for the defense industry.

The VPX3-652 3U VPX Ethernet Switch provides up to 20 ports of copper Ethernet connectivity. Models are available with 16 ports of tri-speed 1000Base-T backplane connections, or with 12 ports of 1000Base-T plus an additional 8 ports of 1000Base-X (SerDes) connections for mixed Base-T/Base-X environments. An additional 1000Base-T port is available on the front panel for air-cooled modules.

Design and Development of Power supply module for a Miniaturized Military Equipment – Case Study from Mistral

The Power supply modules are primarily designed for advanced information and communications equipment, such as radio base stations and switches/routers, and are also used in a wide range of avionics and military applications. The key to designing a successful power supply solution in a military application is a detailed understanding of the specifications and the conditions under which the system will be operating.

The customer approached Mistral to design and develop a compact, multi-function power supply module for miniaturized military equipment. The module was expected to be rugged, small, and lightweight and would have to qualify the Environmental Stress Specifications (ESS).

The RTOS as the engine powering the Internet of Things – Whitepaper from Wind River

Driven by the convergence of cloud technology, rapidly growing data volumes, and in¬creasingly connected devices, the Internet of Things (IoT) poses new challenges and presents a host of new opportunities that businesses of all sizes and industries can seize right now. This system-of-systems is fundamental to realizing business value—unlocking the insight hidden in data, identifying and creating new services, enhancing productiv¬ity and efficiency, improving real-time decision making, solving critical problems, and developing new and innovative user experiences.

Billions of intelligent devices and systems make up IoT. The majority of these “things” are embedded systems, many of which are running a real-time operating system (RTOS). This paper outlines the critical features and characteristics an RTOS must have in order to meet the specific challenges and realize the enormous opportunities of IoT.

A Standards-Based Integration Platform for Reconfigurable Unmanned Aircraft Systems– Whitepaper from RTI

Next generation UAS are not going to be a simple combination of one Ground Control Station (GCS) and one UAV fulfilling one mission requirement. There will be a many to many relationship between GCS’s and UAVs capable of supporting multiple mission objectives.

The system of systems needed to deliver this multi-mission capability will include self- coordinating UAVs controlled by multiple GCS’s, with UAVs and manned aircraft as well as space systems, all co-operating to meet a continuously changing set of mission criteria. This is the vision at the heart of the net-centric environment. This paper addresses the system design and integration challenges involved in meeting the requirements for coordinated deployment of multiple re-configurable Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).

One Day Workshop on High Density Interconnect Technology at ISAC

Mistral’s CTO Rajeev Ramachandra gave the Key note address at the One Day Workshop on High Density Interconnect Technology held at ISAC in Bangalore on the 29th of January. The workshop was aimed at creating awareness among the designer community regarding HDI technology. High Density Interconnect (HDI) technology promises to be the next generation in Space Electronics by accommodating fine-pitch, high pin count devices like array packages. It has advantages in weight, volume and better electrical performance.

There were several demos from Mistral displayed at the event which highlighted the end-to-end solutions and services offered across all Defense domains targeting applications in ground based, airborne and naval systems. Also demonstrated was the Wearable Headset computer designed by Mistral.

Mistral at the Bahrain Air Show 2014

Mistral was invited to the Bahrain International Air Show 2014 (BIAS) by the DRDO as part of their delegation, recognizing our contribution towards the indigenously developed AEW&C. Established in 2010, the BIAS is an international aerospace business event which provides a unique platform to market opportunity and develops networking within the global business community.

India displayed its strength and expertise in design, development and production of high precision equipments at the show. The show witnessed the flying demonstration of AEW&C India, the latest Airborne Early Warning and Control system that can detect, identify and classify threats present in the surveillance area and which can act as a command and control center to support a variety of air operations. DRDO also displayed models of the Light Combat Aircraft- Tejas and models of the Expendable high speed aerial target, Nishant, the multi mission UAV.
