MISTRAL SOLUTIONS

CEO’s Desk

Dear Customer,

Welcome to another issue of Infowaves. Last quarter has seen some impactful changes with the government’s decision to relax foreign direct investment norms in the defense sector, by allowing FDI of up to 49 percent under automatic route and beyond that through the FIPB's approval.

The move in conjunction with the "Make in India" policy is aimed at boosting the domestic industry of the country which imports up to 70 per cent of its military hardware. This would benefit companies like Mistral, with increased opportunities for providing system engineering solutions in the Aerospace and defense domains.

In October, we gave a demo of Mistral-RT1000; an Aerostat based Tactical Aerial Surveillance System, to various state police, military and defense agencies in Bangalore. The optimistic response we received highlighted our nation’s burgeoning interest in adopting cutting-edge, global surveillance technologies.

In this  newsletter we feature the Nano SOM from Mistral, a small form factor i.MX6 based System on Module providing very high processing power. Also included is “A Powerful Graphics Processor and an SBC in a Single 3U Slot – VPX3-716 and XMC-109” from Curtiss Wright.

I take this opportunity to welcome Mr. Ashwani Datta Ex-Chairman & Managing Director, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), who recently joined us as Board Member and Strategic Adviser, for domestic and international Defense Electronics Business.

Please feel free to write to us with any feedbacks or suggestions.

Sincerely,

Small Form Factor Nano SOM

The Nano SOM from Mistral is a small form factor System on Module providing very high processing power. The SOM is built around the powerful 800MHz i.MX6 Quad Core, ARM Cortex A9 SoC from Freescale.

The Nano SOM Board is designed using a micro-BGA (0.4mm Pitch 12mm x 12mm) i.MX6 Quad SoC using PoP (Package on Package)memory assembly to ensure compact package. With a PCB size of 44 mm X 26 mm and weighing just 7 gms, this is one of the smallest SOMs available in the market currently.

Given its small form factor, the Nano SOM is ideal for designing products like bio-metric devices, wearable computers, medical electronic devices, security/personal cameras and other smart gadgets requiring small package and high processing power. Read More..

A Powerful Graphics Processor and SBC in a Single 3U Slot : VPX3-716 and XMC-109 from Curtiss-Wright

Mission computers need efficient processing power and sophisticated graphics while operating in SWaP-constrained platforms. Curtiss-Wright has a unique, thermally optimized hardware configuration and instead of an SBC base card with a graphics mezzanine, it has a graphics base card with an SBC mezzanine. It has a fully validated, pre-integrated board set VPX3-716 3U VPX Graphics Processor and XMC-109 Power Architecture SBC.

The VPX3-716 is a high performance graphics controller offering the latest AMD E8860 embedded discrete GPU technology with up to six independent outputs, 2 GB of dedicated video memory, H.264 motion video decoders and an XMC expansion site. It also provides an expansion mezzanine site to integrate high resolution and high channel count video with the flexibility of selecting the interface types suitable to the end application. A Mobile Command Post can be quickly dispatched to the site of disaster/emergency and can undertake the local command, control & coordination among the multiple agencies responding to the emergency.

This case study showcases Mistral’s capability in designing a customized Mobile Command Post unit for handling emergencies and disasters at Airport premises. Read More..

FMC to FMC+: Keeping Up with New FPGAs and Analog I/O: Whitepaper from Curtiss-Wright

Mezzanine cards are an effective and widely used way to add specialized functions to an embedded system. FPGA Mezzanine Cards (FMCs), under the banner of VITA 57, are exposed to technology change more than most mezzanines standards because they connect I/O devices directly to FPGAs rather than through industry standard busses such as PCI Express® (PCIe).

This whitepaper explores the operating characteristics of FMCs and attempts to explain how FMCs could have more I/O capacity than their XMC counter parts. Read More..
