Dear Customer,Anees

In spite of the slow growth of the global economy, the Embedded System Conference in Silicon Valley held in the month of April, showcased several new products and technologies. The conference was a profound testimony to the rapid development of embedded hardware and software solutions over the last few years. A major highlight of this year’s show was the overdose of ARM based solutions with several interesting reference designs.

Each year is seeing newer and more interesting developments in consumer electronics. Advancements in applications like infotainment, portable multimedia systems and assistive technology have helped the world become a smarter place to live in. Futuristic Gadgets like head mounted wearable computers; interactive audio-visual glasses, Electronic magnifiers for low vision and portable scanners among others are some of significant designs in this domain that Mistral
has contributed to.

Mistral’s expertise in portable multimedia, professional video and power management has helped us provide successful designs for the solutions mentioned above. The recently launched ARM Cortex- A15 processor has unparalleled processing capability with low power consumption thereby enabling products in a wide range of new and existing ARM markets. More on our expertise on Power Management, Video Expertise and ARM technologies is available in this newsletter.

Before I end this note, we would like to thank you for your esteemed support and continued association over the years. I wish you a successful quarter ahead with greater technological developments. Please feel free to write to us with any feedbacks or suggestions.

Sincerely,

Power Management: A blog by Avinash Babu

Performance of embedded devices is highly dependent on adequate power consumption management. For effective power management it is essential to use the available hardware and software resources in the most efficient manner. Hardware design can bring in reliable real time performance while software designs can bring in flexibility and configurability.

This article stresses on the importance of Hardware Software co-design for effective power management giving an interesting example of battery management in smart phones.

Identifying top/bottom field in interlaced video: White Paper by Raja Subramanian and Sanjeev Retna

Determining the top/bottom fields in an interlaced video is important if the video is deinterlaced using Field Combination, Weaving+Bob, Discard and other algorithms based on motion detection. The field information helps to reconstruct the frame with lesser artifacts thereby improving the picture quality dramatically.

This paper presents an approach to determine the top/bottom fields in interlaced videos using
de-interlacing algorithms.
