The 820 Nano SOM from Mistral is an easy to use, ultra-compact, light-weight System on Module providing very high processing power. Based on Qualcomm SnapDragon 820, the 820 Nano SOM is ideal for advanced, next-gen embedded applications. Measuring just 51mm x 26mm, this is one of the smallest Snapdragon based SOMs currently available in the market. The 820 Nano SOM is ideal for designing products like wearable computers, camera solutions, media gateways, Infotainment, drones, assistive devices and other smart gadgets requiring small package and high processing power.
Type C Functionality
A next-generation solution for USB related applications, Type-C condenses most connections to one standard, covering all devices and enhancing usability.
The 820 Nano SOM features a 9axis- MEMS sensor enabling accurate acceleration, angular rate and geomagnetic measurement data for motion-tracking applications.
UFS 2.0 internal memory is designed for improved performance. The 820 Nano SOM offers storage up to 128GB UFS2.0 ensuring improved device responsiveness.
DisplayPort is the first AV protocol that delivers resolutions of 4K and beyond. Mistral’s 820 Nano SOM supports Display Port (DP) over Type C functionality (USB-C).
820 Development Kit
The 820 Development Kit from Mistral is a full featured, easy-to-use, scalable development platform built around the Quad-core Kryo™ 2.2 GHz 64-bit CPU. The 820 Development Kit is based on modular architecture and consists of the Qualcomm SnapDrago 820 based 820 Nano SOM and a carrier board. The carrier board hosts the Wireless On-board Antenna, Ethernet controller, connectors and expansion headers.
Additionally, Mistral also offers optional adaptor boards for improved/increased scope of development around the 820 Nano SOM. These include LCD, Camera, and Battery Charger boards.
The presence of PCIe connectors and custom expansion connectors make it possible to customize the carrier board to realize features beyond the existing hardware. The features supported on the carrier board include a Gigabit Ethernet port, Micro SD connector for extended storage, Type-C (with Display Port and dual role functions for Power Delivery and USB SS) and USB HS.
Additional Adaptor boards are available for the 820 Development Kit for accelerated product development that exercises various interfaces via the expansion connectors. These boards ensure easier customization and faster turnaround of the end product design.
The display adaptor uses the expansion connectors present on the development board to realize support for display over LCD and user interface over touchscreen. Mistral provides a standard LCD interfaced to the APQ8096 over DSI and touchscreen panel interfaced over I2C with the display adaptor board.
The camera adaptor uses the expansion connectors present on the development board of the 820 development platform to realize support for camera. The camera module available on the camera adaptor board has the capability to capture images at 4K resolution.
Some features have been tested and proven with prototype versions of the development kit. These features, though not present on the carrier board, can be realized through custom adaptor boards that can be built upon receiving specifications for the features. Yes, most of the primary interfaces on the Snapdragon 820 processor are exposed through the expansion connectors present on the 820 Development Kit.
Adaptor boards are available and can also be custom designed by Mistral to accommodate other hardware to the 820 Development Kit and the required drivers for them need to be developed in order to realize the required functionality.
Camera is a feature that is realized using the adaptor board. This needs to be obtained separately and does not ship with the 820 Development Kit.
When connected to the Carrier board through the custom expansion header, the camera adaptor board makes the 820 Development Kit capable of realizing camera based applications.
LCD can be realized using another custom adaptor board. However, the 820 Development Kit supports display through HDMI by default.
The camera adaptor board needs to be customized to accommodate the sensor chosen by a customer. This will include software development to realize the functionality of the chosen sensor on the Development Kit.
The camera adaptor board is designed for quick customization and hence the turnaround time to modify the design to accommodate a different camera sensor would be short. Mistral can provide the required customization support at an additional cost.
