The 820 Development Kit from Mistral is a full featured, easy-to-use, scalable development platform built around the Quad-core Kryo™ 2.2 GHz 64-bit CPU. The 820 Development Kit is based on modular architecture and consists of the Qualcomm SnapDragon 820 based 820 Nano SOM and a carrier board. The carrier board hosts the Wireless On-board Antenna, Ethernet controller, connectors and expansion headers.

Additionally, Mistral also offers optional adaptor boards for improved/increased scope of development around the 820 Nano SOM. These include LCD, Camera, and Battery Charger boards.

The Camera Adaptor Boards from Mistral are designed to realize imaging applications with Mistral’s 820 Development kit using OmniVision sensors with resolutions ranging from 2MP to 13MP.

OVERVIEW

The 820 Starter Kit from Mistral is a low-cost development platform built around the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 (APQ8096) SoC. Based on a dual board architecture, the starter kit consists of Mistral’s 820 Nano SOM & a Carrier Board that provides access to interfaces such as USB over Type-C & Camera among others.

The 820 Nano SOM is designed based on Qualcomm’s 64-bit quad-core CPU, the Snapdragon 820 (APQ8096) SoC for realizing embedded applications. The Snapdragon 820 (APQ8096) processor with its cutting-edge processing capabilities and power efficient features makes it possible to support the ultimate in connectivity, graphics, image processing and efficiency.

The 820 Starter Kit is designed to exercise the primary features provided on 820 Nano SOM. Custom expansion connectors help customize the starter kit to realize features beyond the existing hardware. The 820 Starter Kit is ideal for product designers intending to realize the features of their product using the 820 Nano SOM.

In addition, Mistral provides Camera Adaptor Boards that can be accommodated on the expansion connectors to enable camera applications. The Starter Kit comes with Android Oreo & Yocto Linux BSPs.

4.        What software is provided with 820 Nano SoM

The 820 Nano SOM is programmed with Android 7 (Nougat) when it is delivered.

Customer need to register their product through our website (https://www.mistralsolutions.com/product-engineering-services/support/product-registration-2/).  Upon completion, the following are provided

  • Pre-built binary images for Linux kernel and Android 7 (Nougat)
  • Pre-built binary images for Linux kernel and Yocto 2.0
  • Source code for Linux kernel, Android 7 (Nougat), Yocto 2.0
  • Any available Software Updates

5.         How will I obtain source code and built it for the 820 Development Kit?

Upon completion of the product registration (https://www.mistralsolutions.com/product-engineering-services/support/product-registration-2/), customers will be able to access Documentation, source code for Linux kernel, Android and build scripts to configure and build the sources.

All software updates, as and when available will also be accessible to customers through this portal

6.         How do I enable the development platform with software I have built?

The Software User Manual provided with the 820 Development Kit has information related to

  • Setting up a build environment for Linux kernel, Android, Yocto
  • Configuring and building the sources
  • Programming the built binary images to the platform
  • Functionality verification of features available

7.         Can I interface other hardware on the 820 Development Kit?

Yes, most of the primary interfaces on the Snapdragon 820 processor are exposed through the expansion connectors present on the 820 Development Kit.

Adaptor boards are available and can also be custom designed by Mistral to accommodate other hardware to the 820 Development Kit and the required drivers for them need to be developed in order to realize the required functionality.

8.         What interfaces are available through expansion connectors?

9.         What is the default display interface on the 820 Development kit?

The default display interface on the 820 Development Kit is HDMI.  The Carrier board has a HDMI connector through which any standard HDMI display can be used to view the Android user interface.

 

10.         I don’t see a camera or LCD on the 820 Development Kit.  How can I prototype requirements that need a camera and display?

Camera is a feature that is realized using the adaptor board.  This needs to be obtained separately and does not ship with the 820 Development Kit.

When connected to the Carrier board through the custom expansion header, the camera adaptor board makes the 820 Development Kit capable of realizing camera based applications.

LCD can be realized using another custom adaptor board.  However, the 820 Development Kit supports display through HDMI by default.

11.         I want to use a camera module of my choice.  How can this be done?

The camera adaptor board needs to be customized to accommodate the sensor chosen by a customer.  This will include software development to realize the functionality of the chosen sensor on the Development Kit.

The camera adaptor board is designed for quick customization and hence the turnaround time to modify the design to accommodate a different camera sensor would be short.  Mistral can provide the required customization support at an additional cost.

12.         What technical support is provided by Mistral?

Up to two hours of installation support is provided through email to help customers bring up the development kit with the software programmed on the 820 Nano SOM.

13.         Can the 820 Nano SoM platform be customized?
